It’s no secret that Italy has some of the best food in the world. In Rome you can find every kind of pizza and pasta you could dream of and the ingredients to make it all yourself. There are even some incredible foods here you may have never heard of. I personally love food and am always looking to try new things, so living in Rome has been like a wonderland of foods and recipes for me. I’ve tried a lot of new foods since I’ve been here and I want to share some of my favorite places and foods with you.
The absolute most delicious thing I’ve eaten so far was at a tiny takeaway restaurant called “Suppli”. Upon first glance you wouldn’t look twice, but this seemingly forgettable hole in the wall has some unforgettable food. Suppli is kind of like arancini (fried rice balls), but they are mixed with red sauce and feature a mozzarella ball in the center. You may be averse to a rice and cheese combination, but this is something you absolutely must try while in Rome. Arancini can be found all over Italy and are a great food to grab if you’re in a rush or just in need of a little snack.
This same restaurant also has the best pizza I’ve tried. It has marinara so fresh you can practically see the tomato fields and so much garlic it’s a bit spicy. There’s no cheese, so the garlic intensifies the flavors of the tomato and the crispy crust pulls it all together.
There are also a few good places near Temple Rome’s campus that are worth trying:
For a quick breakfast, Flambar has great coffee drinks and croissants, or “cornetti” in Italian.
For lunch, there are a lot of options around campus:
If you’re in the mood for a sandwich I recommend Alimentari Bucchi, where you can select fresh ingredients from a bountiful deli case.
When you feel it’s time to eat some vegetables, there’s a place called MyBags down the street with lots of healthy options and a nice outdoor seating area.
For some authentic Italian pasta, there’s a highly lauded pasta market around the corner with some delicious combinations and a convenient order sheet.
And of course, when you’re craving some classic pizza, Alice is popular Italian chain that has recently reached Philadelphia as well.
Lastly, let us have dessert. There is a place in San Lorenzo called SAID. It’s a bit far from the residence, but absolutely worth the trip. SAID is an old chocolate factory turned restaurant and it’s even better than it sounds. They serve dinner, but you can go in for just dessert if you want. They also still sell amazing chocolates at the entrance, but once you try one you’ll have to go in for more.
In addition to these places, there are so many restaurants and markets to try all over Rome and all over Italy. The food in Rome is unparalleled and even if you don’t study here I hope everyone gets a chance to try it someday.
Until next time,
